UK clothes retailer Next has said the December snow cost it £22m in Christmas sales, and Mothercare and Clinton Cards issue profit warnings after the winter weather hit their businesses. UK VAT went up to 20% on 4th January (from 17.5%), putting additional strain on consumer spending, which makes for a gloomy outlook on the high street.
Profit warnings and store closures caused by snow is a post from: IT Governance Blog on IT governance, risk management, compliance and information security.

The UK has just seen the coldest November in sixteen years and with snow once again affecting people's daily lives, now is the time to prepare your organisation for a long, cold winter.
Some organisations are affected more than others by adverse weather conditions depending on the nature of their business and their location. One common issue, which affects most organisations, is how to cope when staff are unable to get to work.
Prepare now for the long, cold winter is a post from: IT Governance Blog on IT governance, risk management, compliance and information security.

80% of organisations with a tried and tested business continuity plan are likely to survive a major business discontinuity; only 20% of those without a business continuity plan are likely to survive.
Over 90% of organisations that suffer a significant data loss are not in business two years later.
A Business Continuity Institute survey indicates that 30% of businesses still don't have a business continuity plan.
The data indicates that many of the existing plans are not comprehensive and that maintenance (testing and updating) is generally inadequate.
'Backup' is not the same as a business continuity plan, and terrorism should be specifically addressed.
All organisations face business continuity risks.
ITIL, or to use its full name, the Information Technology Infrastructure Library, is a methodology for managing IT as a service. It has a focus on the end user, rather than on the technology and is considered as best practice.
As the five core titles reflect the lifecycle of services, their appeal encompasses the entire spectrum of people involved at any stage of the framework. So, without being the prime audience, everyone involved will benefit from access to the entire library.
Organisation-wide access to the ITILv3 Library is a post from: IT Governance Blog on IT governance, risk management, compliance and information security.

Agile approaches are business practices with a proven track record for helping organisations to achieve greater efficiency, higher quality outputs and increased customer satisfaction. The basic concept behind Agile is that organisations must adapt to change. Agile principles, therefore, encourage staff to produce high quality business outputs at regular intervals, basing ongoing financial and resource commitments on the delivered outcomes. In this way, they enable organisations to avoid the trappings of extensive up-front planning and up-front budget commitments.

IT Governance Publishing (ITGP), the specialist publishing arm of information security experts IT Governance, is bringing the principles of Sun Tzu’s classic text, The Art of War, to the fight against cybercrime.
ITGP’s latest book, Assessing Information Security: Strategies, Tactics, Logic and Framework, argues that the art of war, and the art of information security, are more closely aligned than one might expect. Technical skills and procedural knowledge are not enough; these qualities need to be deployed strategically to control the cybercrime battlefield.
IT GOVERNANCE brings ‘THE ART OF WAR’ TO THE FIGHT AGAINST CYBERCRIME is a post from: IT Governance Blog on IT governance, risk management, compliance and information security.
