HMV are to close 40 stores this year as sales dive. UK clothes retailer Next has said the December snow cost it £22m in Christmas sales, and Mothercare and Clinton Cards issue profit warnings after the winter weather hit their businesses. UK VAT went up to 20% on 4th January (from 17.5%), putting additional strain on consumer spending, which makes for a gloomy outlook on the high street.
It’s not just consumer facing organisations that suffer with adverse weather conditions. Any organisation that depends on the movement of goods will suffer some kind of inconvenience when the snow causes havoc on the roads and stops airports from opening.
Although there is very little you can do about the weather, you can reduce the impact it has on your organisation by implementing a business continuity management system that will enable you to resume business quickly and efficiently and to respond to unforeseen events.

The UK has just seen the coldest November in sixteen years and with snow once again affecting people’s daily lives, now is the time to prepare your organisation for a long, cold winter.
Some organisations are affected more than others by adverse weather conditions depending on the nature of their business and their location. One common issue, which affects most organisations, is how to cope when staff are unable to get to work.

People skills, sometimes known as ‘soft skills,’ are personal attributes that enhance an individual’s interactions, job performance and career prospects.

 |
One particular skill that everyone would benefit from improving is their presentation skills. The ability to present articulately to customers, management, peers and others can significantly enhance your credibility, clout, and professional status.
Delivering presentations at work or professional events is an unbeatable way to gain a reputation as a valued employee and an expert in your field.
If you have ever tried to get out of giving a presentation because of nerves, or if you feel there is room for improvement in your presentation techniques, then Presentation Skills for Technical Professionals is for you. |
“… It’s an easy and entertaining read, and I learned a lot … There is lots more great information about all aspects of presenting in this book. I highly recommend it to everyone who ever has to make a presentation”
Lisa Crispin, co-author of ‘Agile Testing: A Practical Guide for Testers and Agile Teams’

Business Continuity is an important issue for all organisations no matter their size or sector. All organisations face business continuity risks. Consider:
- 80% of organisations with a tried and tested business continuity plan are likely to survive a major business discontinuity; only 20% of those without a business continuity plan are likely to survive.
- Over 90% of organisations that suffer a significant data loss are not in business two years later.
- A Business Continuity Institute survey indicates that 30% of businesses still don’t have a business continuity plan.
- The data indicates that many of the existing plans are not comprehensive and that maintenance (testing and updating) is generally inadequate.
- ‘Backup’ is not the same as a business continuity plan, and terrorism should be specifically addressed.

ITIL, or to use its full name, the Information Technology Infrastructure Library, is a methodology for managing IT as a service. It has a focus on the end user, rather than on the technology and is considered as best practice.
As the five core titles reflect the lifecycle of services, their appeal encompasses the entire spectrum of people involved at any stage of the framework. So, without being the prime audience, everyone involved will benefit from access to the entire library.
Access the entire Library in a format that works for your organisation:
