It’s that time of year again when most public sector organisations and many private sector organisations begin to look at budgets for the next financial year. With the country struggling to come out of recession and with big public sector cut backs on the horizon, it is vital that every pound spent can be justified, accounted for and not wasted. Whist tight financial controls are inevitable, given the state of the economy, it is essential that funds are available for projects that will help organisations to survive and prosper though the upturn.

Over the next few weeks, as budgets for 2010/2011 are agreed and finalised, it is likely that your budgetary requirements from the previous 12 months will be taken in to consideration. If you have remaining funds from the 2009/2010 financial year and plan to roll over any residual funds into the next financial year, think again. It is highly unlikely that you’ll be rewarded for good financial control, but rather penalised for holding excess cash and, as a result, will see a reduction in next year’s budget.

Recently my neck of the woods has been taking a bit of a beating from the weather gods. First it was the rain, which flooded part of the town I live in and all but destroyed a couple of towns nearby. This week it’s been snow, which has reduced the main roads in and out of my home town to a complete standstill at some times, and an outright deathtrap at others.

Happily having a member of staff, or even several members of staff, trapped by the weather has little or no impact on ITG’s continuing operation. Why? Because we operate an Information Security Management System to the ISO27001 standard. We are prepared.

In light of the impending Royal Mail postal strikes we have made permanent arrangements to bypass UK Royal Mail for all overseas customers and we have a low-cost alternative in place to bypass Royal Mail in the UK in accordance with which we will reduce the UK express shipping cost to just £7 from today.

IT Governance, the one-stop shop for compliance expertise, is taking a lead in National Identity Fraud Prevention Week by launching an online resource for small businesses, or individuals, seeking to strengthen their IT security.

Organisations across the UK are, this week, urging businesses and consumers to take action now to protect themselves against ID fraud.

IT Governance is unveiling a web page, called ‘Keep Safe Online’, packed with information to help people stand firm against attempted breaches of online security, such as phishing attacks on webmail services.
